Paracetamol

Paracetamol is a common painkiller that can also help with high temperature. It is often used for:-

  • headaches
  • joint pain, swelling, and stiffness
  • cold and flu symptoms

Most types of paracetamol are available over-the-counter in shops and pharmacies, but some require a prescription.

Paracetamol was my go-to painkiller until I discovered ibuprofen, which seemed much better at relieving the pain from gout. Unfortunately, my blood-pressure medication later complicated my use of NSAIDs, so I went back to paracetamol – and discovered Panadol Extra, which contains paracetamol and caffeine and, for me at least, seemed almost as effective at relieving the pain.

Always read the information supplied with medicines and, if you’re unsure, ask a medical professional – your pharmacist is often a very good place to start.
